Canucks Army GDT #10 - Canucks @ Blue Jackets

In his only start of the season, Eddie Lack kept his team in it until they woke up.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you that this game is going to be anywhere near as entertaining as yesterday's shootout loss to the Penguins. Because it won't. You'll probably recall that the Canucks and Blue Jackets played three times within the span of 18 days during last season's condensed schedule, and mustered up a total of 5 goals scored between them. I love hockey and don't necessarily need a ton of goals to be entertained, but man, that was some dreadfully boring hockey.

It's not alllll bad though. The Canucks have had a very successful start to their 7-game roadtrip, gaining 5 out of a possible 6 points so far. They are also coming off of their most impressive showing of the season. It's an early Sunday afternoon, and this is the second outing of a weekend back-to-back, so let's keep things short and sweet with a quick preview of the game right past the jump.

This was probably the least entertaining part of the game, but I enjoy this photo for some reason.

If you had a hectic Friday night out and about and missed the Vancouver Canucks take on the Pittsburgh Penguins as a result, that sucks, because it was an enjoyable affair. Getting out of bed a few hours before I normally would on a typical Saturday morning was totally worth it; this game pretty much had it all.

The Canucks put forth pretty clearly their most impressive showing of the season (keeping in mind the quality of competition), before ultimately losing out on a potential 2nd point in the shootout. Given their performance from start to finish, they really deserved better. But there's reason for optimism regardless of the end result, and things to build off of going forward in the final 4 games of the roadtrip (and beyond).

Read on past the jump for a recap of what went down.

Madison Bowey and Tyson Baillie are leading the way for the strong Kelowna Rockets
Madison Bowey and Tyson Baillie are leading the way for the strong Kelowna Rockets.

The Vancouver Giants haven't played a game since ending their disasterous eastern road trip without a win, so instead we'll turn our attention this week toward the Okanagan and what is probably the B.C. Division's top team: the Kelowna Rockets. Led by offensive contributions from young guns Tyson Baillie, Nick Merkley and Riley Stadel, the Rockets are off to a furious 6-1-0-2 start. They trail only the Victoria Royals for the B.C. Division lead, but the Royals have played four more games.

For a closer look at Kelowna's early season success, read past the jump.

Split?

This is a regular Friday feature combining a healthy mixture of observation, analysis, and foresight on the Vancouver Canucks. If you'd like to get at me about anything covered in this column, follow me on Twitter at @yyjordan and let's start a textual relationship (wink).

Good lord, the Buffalo Sabres are as bad as the numbers, and the people on my Twitter timeline say. I've got to say that I hadn't seen much of them through the first few weeks of this early season, but by essentially any metric they had been absolutely abysmal through the first 8 games of the season.

The Canucks pounced on them early, and took advantage of their general ineptitude en route to another victory against an inferior opponent. I'm not going to fault them for beating a poor team - you can only play the team that's in front of you, after all - but we need to keep things in perspective and not get too carried away since there's a strong chance that the 2013-14 Buffalo Sabres will go down as a historically bad team.

Still.. the Canucks are now 2-0 on their season long 7-game roadtrip, and have secured 4 meaningful points ahead of their upcoming matchup with Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
