When Mike Gillis selected Yann Sauve in the second round of the 2008 NHL draft, it was only his second draft pick ever as the General Manager of the Canucks. Sauve was seen as a big (6 foot 3, 220 pounds) puck moving defenseman with solid skating ability. Heralded as a 2-way defenseman, his stock had steadily dropped over the last couple seasons as his junior team (the Saint John Sea Dogs) steadily improved. It was said that the development of his offensive game had stalled, and that he no longer had top-4 potential.

According to Renaud Lavoie of RDS the Canucks have invited thirty-three year old checking center Steve Begin to training camp. He is the third veteran invitee so far - and based on the big hint Laurence Gillman dropped earlier this week - he may not be the last. Professional Try Out (or PTO) deals don't count against the teams fifty contract limit. You can read the press-release announcing the PTO deal from canucks.nhl.com here.

While the jury is still out on first-round pick Jordan Schroeder, the Canucks undoubtedly managed to pluck some solid prospects from the 2009 draft class after the first 30 picks. They selected offensive-defenseman Kevin Connauton as well as skilled forward Steven Anthony in the eighth round. But the real gem from Vancouver’s 2009 draft class is the skater they selected in the second round, Swedish forward Anton Rodin.
