A Happy Ending to Booth's Groin Strain?

When the Canucks lost David Booth for four-to-six weeks due to a needlessly controversial groin strain suffered during the club's fitness testing process on Sunday, the club suddenly found themselves down two-thirds of their second line. Losing Booth's play-driving ability and secondary scoring seems like a tough blow for a Canucks club that struggled to score in their first round series against the Kings and relied an awful lot on puck-luck, stellar goaltending and their defensive shell down the stretch last season.

So should Canucks fans expect the 2013 version of the team to depart significantly from the uptempo stylings the paying public had grown accustomed to watching over the course of the the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons? Or is it possible that Booth's injury won't change the tempo the Canucks play that much and in fact might actually provide other players on the club with a significant opportunity to step up and prove they belong in an NHL top-six?

Think about how important Brian Campbell and Sheldon Souray were to their respective teams last season after being forced out of their old organizations due to a high salary cap hit.

Now, think about the possibilities of compliance buy-outs to guys like Shawn Horcoff and Jay Bouwmeester in the offseason. Or, if you want to look at this season alone, Scott Gomez and Wade Redden.

The SYAE Podcast: A Season Preview

Dimitri Filipovic

"I'd be a lot more comfortable if you just asked Dimitri and Jeff these questions instead."

Short. Sweet, but still a little rugged in an intriguing way. All business. Definitely taking nothing off of the table.

You might think that I'm talking about Andrew Ebbett, but in this particular instance, I'm not. Instead I'm referring to the latest edition of the So You're an Expert podcast, in which Jeff Angus joined me to preview the season that's nearly upon us.

You'll notice that it's a short episode (hovering around 15 minutes in length), and that's because we just don't know very much at the moment as it relates to the two biggest talking points surrounding the team - the Roberto Luongo trade saga, and the opening down the middle on the second line. But we did our best to broach the subjects, despite the potential for the entire discussion to be deemed obsolete at any moment.

We also took a look at the two depth defensemen signings, and meandered around the Northwest Division.
