There was a draft lottery last night. Fans of the fourteen teams who missed the playoffs keyed in, hoping that their team could move up a few slots in the order, hoping to secure a better prospect that would eventually help to turn the franchise around. As someone who has been following the Oilers all year, I can‘t help but think that it would have been far nicer not caring.

There are thirty teams in the NHL. Each team has one first line, with three forwards on it; ergo there have been ninety first-line players since the lockout. Defining a first-line player is difficult, but the most obvious requirement is offense. With that in mind, I went and researched the top ninety players by points per game since the lockout at Hockey-Reference.com.

With one game remaining in the regular season, a playoff spot locked up, and the Vancouver Canucks opponent being the lowly Colorado Avalanche, you could be forgiven for assuming that this is a meaningless game tonight. Far from it.
GDB #81: A Difference In Motivation

In tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Kings, the Vancouver Canucks shouldn’t have any difficulty finding motivation. After a less than brilliant 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames, they have a shot at the Northwest Division title – if they win out and the Flames lose one of their final two games, the Canucks will end the regular season third in the West.
