Anyone who spent even a few seconds glancing at the Canucks’ defensive depth chart knew that the depth defencemen on the team were going to have some trouble making the roster. And anyone who spent a few seconds glancing at the team’s cap situation knew that players making more money than they were worth would have a black mark against them. At that junction of depth defenceman avenue and earns more than he’s worth street sits Shane O’Brien, who was waiver earlier today, along with Darcy Hordichuk.

By now, everyone is likely aware that the Canucks have sent away assistant coach Ryan Walter, and replaced him with Newell Brown, most recently a coach with the Anaheim Ducks. What does Brown’s background look like?

As a guy who spends a lot of his time watching and writing about hockey, I also read a lot of hockey publications. And suffice to say that if I had a nickel for every time I read how the “New NHL” encourages speed and “opens up the game” for skill players, allowing small players who otherwise would never have had a chance at the big leagues to get a taste of it, then I’d have a lot of nickels to throw at the guys who do the write-ups for THN draft previews.

On This Day Over The Past Three Years

It's early.  Still, teams that get off to strong starts can protect themselves against injuries and late season slumps, while teams getting off to weak starts can dig themselves a hole that's extremely difficult to climb out of.  Are there examples of teams leading the league or dwelling in the basement at this point turning their seasons around?  Let's look back over the past three years.
