It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Canucks general manager Mike Gillis, and along the way he has faced many important decisions. The decision to sign Bieksa and trade Ehrhoff was the one that stands out as key, but the unrestricted free agency of key depth players like Sami Salo, Chris Higgins and Raffi Torres was also an important consideration.
Decisions have now been made on all three; Gillis signed Sami Salo earlier today, and we now also know that Chris Higgins will be back while Raffi Torres will not.

Over the last couple of days, we’ve seen some crazy money handed out to defensemen slated for unrestricted free agency. Somehow, Christian Ehrhoff landed a deal for a decade, and James Wisniewski is going to make more than $5.0 million per season.
In that kind of climate, the Canucks undoubtedly got themselves a great deal when earlier today Sami Salo agreed to a one-year, $2.0 million contract.

Negotiations between the Vancouver Canucks and Christian Ehrhoff have reached an endpoint with the news that Vancouver has accepted a fourth round draft pick from the New York Islanders in exchange for the pending unrestricted free agent.
