Roberto Luongo is an excellent goaltender. Year after year he consistently posts well above average numbers, numbers that mark him as one of the league’s best goaltenders. He’s also a slow starter, and a little bit streaky – in recent history he typically starts poorly, and interchanges unbeatable months with poorer ones. Let’s look at his work in October for the Vancouver Canucks.

Mark Spector’s piece on Sportsnet ripping into Canucks fans for their heinous treatment of Roberto Luongo was flawed on many levels. Aside from the obvious and basic problem – that Spector takes an entire fan-base, melds them into one, and then explains why he and the rest of the country are laughing at them is obviously flawed – I was struck by Spector’s wildly inaccurate and vaguely racist implication that Vancouver’s problems are the result of drafting too many Europeans.

Last night, watching the negative reaction to Tom Renney’s selection of Shawn Horcoff for shootout duty, I was struck by how poorly a player’s shootout ability is reflected in his overall offensive totals (Horcoff has, when used, been one of the league’s best shootout options).
So I decided to look at who the worst shootout players in the game (min. 20 shots) have been, and it’s quite a list. Among the skaters on the list are numerous major award winners – guys who have led the league in total goals, total points, and been named the NHL’s most valuable player. The Canucks, Oilers and Maple Leafs are all represented. One of them even shows up on the highlight video above. Like I said, it’s quite a list.

The launch of a new hockey season also means the launch of a new fantasy hockey season. For those who like something a little more interactive than hockey pools, Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey is a popular and ever-growing option.
While most teams have already made tweaks, some will still be looking for a little help on the waiver wire or from the free agent pool – so today, we look at some of the best players still available for nothing in 50% or more of Yahoo! Leagues.

We've gone from one end of the Nation Network to the other, polling writers from Canucks Army on the West Coast to Leafs Nation in the East (readers of the latter site, please feel free to substitute "Universal Center" for "East" in your minds) and everywhere in between.
What we've come back with are the Nations' projected NHL standings for 2011-12.
