With the signings of Mathieu Schneider, Christian Ehrhoff, and Brad Lukowich, the Vancouver Canucks have eight NHL-caliber defencemen in their stall to start the season. Arguably, the Canucks have the deepest set of blue-liners in the NHL right now.
That's the good news.
The bad news is that it can't and won't stay that way.

Mike Gillis was a busy guy on Friday.
First, Gillis and the Canucks announced that they traded Patrick White and Daniel Rahimi to the San Jose Sharks for Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich. Minutes later, the club announced the official signing of UFA Mathieu Schneider.
So what was previously a perceived weakness this coming season, the Canucks now have a very solid defence corps, and a need to move a couple of defencemen to make room in the roster and the salary cap.

A number of news sources around Vancouver are reporting that the Canucks are close to signing veteran D Mathieu Schneider to a one-year deal.
It also appears that Canucks captain Roberto Luongo is nearing completion on a contract extension that will keep the all-star goaltender for a significant amount of length, possibly for the rest of his career.
There is a glimmer of hope that Mike Gillis is getting this team ready for the coming NHL season.
Gillis Has a Full Well, But is the Water Any Good?

Mike Gillis has undoubtedly put his stamp on this team, from the ground up.
I was trying to think of a comparison of Gillis's work with the Canucks, since he took over last spring.
I thought of a water well. Mike Gillis has dug a deep well for this club, full of water. The problem is.. how good is the water in that well?

The Canucks' trade rumour mill is starting to turn again.
I suspect that this is mostly because Canucks fans are so damn bored that they want to hear about ANYTHING, so rumours start flying fast.
The two names that I have heard as possible targets for the Canucks are Nikolai Zherdev (ex NYR) and Andrei Markov (MTL).
So who would you rather see in a Canucks uniform in October?
