Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer

I really love being a Hockey Dad. Since I didn’t play hockey as a kid, I relish the experiences of life at the rink as I watch my oldest daughter plays her favourite sport (and mine). There are some crazy hours and early mornings and there can be a lot of driving, but it’s all worth it. I don't suppose that makes me different at all from any of the other hockey parents. We all love watching our kids play and are proud to help them do so.
What does make me have a different perspective on watching my kid play hockey is that my 10-year-old hockey playing daughter is a cancer survivor, who lost her kidney to cancer surgery one week after her fifth birthday.
Luckily for us, our daughter fought back and conquered her cancer. Now, our family does what we can to raise money to help the fight against cancer. So when I first learned about Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, a dawn-to-dusk fundraising event centred on a massive road hockey game, I jumped at the chance to volunteer and fundraise.

It's Friday. So we close out the "Week That Was" with our latest volume of... "Cheers and Jeers!"
This week, we write an insulting low-ball offer to the NHL owners and Scott Parker, while handing some serious cheddar to Shea Weber and Mike Foligno.

This week, we fold on Janssen, Hasek and Jets fans, while we give an Ace on the river to Luongo, Selanne and Shane Doan's agent.
The Offseason So Far

Canucks GM Mike Gillis has been reasonably quiet this off-season,
making safe, reasonable moves. Is it about due for a BOLD decision?

It was 29 days ago that the LA Kings won the Stanley Cup on home-ice, and marked the commencement of the 2012 offseason. In the four weeks since, the Canucks have been relatively busy. The team made some curious decisions in terms of who they selected in the NHL draft, and who they've allowed to walk in free-agency. They've become younger too, as General Manager Mike Gillis re-signed Cory Schneider to a reasonable deal, and brought in 27 year old free-agent defenseman Jason Garrison with one of the best value deals of this 2012 "free agent frenzy."
Usually what we've seen already would constitute the "meat" of the offseason for the team. Between now and September there'd be a couple of arbitration decisions remaining, perhaps some minor trades, several PTO offers and that would be that. But this isn't your usual NHL offseason.

This week, we talk a lot about Twitter. Nail Yakupov is good at it, fans should react better to stuff tweeted out on it, and the Canucks need to be faster on mammoth events like Bure finally making it to the Hall. Meanwhile did you hear about that coach who assaulted a kid in a handshake line? Fuck that guy...
