The Vancouver Canucks today announced the signing of Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk to pro-tryout offers, which work as an invite to training camp. These offers do not guarantee that the players make the team, but with the Canucks banged up a little to start the season, there's a chance that one of these players may make the team out of training camp and play for a few games in lieu of a rookie. PTO's do not count against the teams alotted fifty contracts. Here's the official press release from Canucks.com.
It's early August, so let's analyze these "transactions".

The month of July forced many Canuck fans to lean forward a tiny bit in their chairs whenever any discussion of Shea Weber took place. The BC-born defenseman aroused the interest of many a fan, across all teams, of course, but he is very near and dear to those of us in British Columbia. He's from here, he played against Vancouver in the 2nd round playoff series, and, of course, we all remember that legendary time he broke the net in the Olympics.

Every so often, an analyst will talk about how a certain player deserved a "three star" nominee because he won two or three big faceoffs. Even more so often a coach will send out two centremen in a high-leverage situation to win a key, late draw. The question is whether this tactic has a tangible value.

Let's preface this by saying that Daniel and Henrik Sedin are two of the best players in the National Hockey League and I would probably not trade them straight up for any centre-and-wing combination on any team in the NHL right now. I'll let foreign fans fester that thought and come up with such names, but for Canuck fans here, it is time to turn our minds to the harsh reality of the situation: The Sedins are not good defensive players.

In light of Russian hockey journalist Dmitry Chesnokov tweeting that "[Nikolay] Zherdev's Russian agent says the player is considering only NHL offers at this point," you have to think that either a) the player is mulling a series of offers or b) no team has put forth a serious offer to the player.
