Mike Gillis would like to explain his relatively conservative trade deadline history to you.
With the trade deadline readily approaching, we've kicked our all-encompassing preview into high gear. Already on this platform, we have taken an inventory of what the team has and what it needs, we have "Strombabbled", and we have looked at some of the "BOLD MOVES" from the Gillis era (i.e. acquiring Keith Ballard, buying David Booth's services, and trading away Cody Hodgson).
In anticipation of the April 3rd deadline, it's time for us to take a look at what Mike Gillis has managed to do during his tenure as GM of the team on that very day. As you'll see, there's no doubt that there have been good moves, there have been bad moves, and there have been moves that nobody really cares about. But can we sum them all up in an attempt to grasp his general strategy?

Sedins, Schneider, Empty Netters Beat Avalanche 4-1: Recap and Chance Data

Daniel Sedin scored the winning goal in the third, as the Sedins helped will the Canucks to their 6th straight win.
On Thursday night, the Vancouver Canucks won their 6th straight game - for the 2nd time this season, with the first occasion stretching from January 30th to February 12th - with a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. I figure this game recap is mostly read by people who didn't have a chance to catch the game for whatever reason. Assuming that to be the case, I'll play along.
Your eyes technically aren't deceiving you. The Canucks scored 4 goals, ultimately winning this one by comfortable margin. What's that you say? Two of the goals came in the final 84 seconds without a goaltender manning the opposing team's net? Semantics. 4 goals are 4 goals, right?

Cory Schneider had to find a way to keep busy on Tuesday night, as the Blue Jackets certainly didn't seem interested in helping out.
Sorry, this game recap would have been up sooner, if not for the fact that I fell asleep sometime between the second period and the third. That game was.. not all that aesthetically pleasing (I'm being kind). Sure, we'll go with that description.
The Canucks came out of the gate with their guns blazing, blitzing a Columbus Blue Jackets squad that looked severely outmatched. Their early efforts didn't result in a goal, but at least there were plenty of positives to be taken from the team's play. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, as the game went along the action slowed down, and eventually ground to a halt.
Both teams seemed somewhat satisfied to let it go into overtime, assuring themselves at least the one point. After 65 minutes of hockey couldn't produce a single goal, a Max Lapierre shootout winner gave the Canucks the victory and in doing so extended their winning streak to 5 games.

Game #33 Preview: Blue Jackets @ Canucks

The Canucks look to get by Fedor Tyutin and the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
Thanks to a scheduling quirk resulting from the lockout, the Vancouver Canucks and Columbus Blue Jackets face each other on Tuesday night for the 3rd time in 19 days. The first two contests took place in Ohio and were, um, fairly painful to watch. The matchups featured a game that ended in a shootout, a game that was decided in overtime, and just 5 goals total in over 129 combined minutes of play.
The Canucks are coming back home off of a thoroughly successful roadtrip, and are winners of four in a row. But I'm sure the visiting Blue Jackets - who are 7-1-2 in their past 10, themselves - will try their best to stop both that streak, and the fans from having any fun.
For what it's worth, the last time I made mention of how few goals I was expecting heading into a game, the Canucks beat the Nashville Predators by a score of 7-4. Just remember who to thank if this one goes that way.

Canucks Steal One From The Kings Thanks to Strong Goaltending, Quick Strike: Recap and Chance Data

The Kings tried to rattle Cory Schneider, but he was in the zone, yet again.
At this point of the season, the Canucks and their fans can't be overly picky about how the team gets the two points. Given how hotly contested both the Northwest Division and the Western Conference in general are at the moment, all that matters is that they get 'em, any way, any how.
Which is why it's hard to be overly critical of the Canucks after their performance in Los Angeles, considering they managed to pull one out on Saturday afternoon against the Kings. Despite the fact that they were pretty thoroughly outplayed, Cory Schneider served as the great equalizer.
