Kalamazoo faced the South Carolina Stingrays (Washington Capitals affiliate) in the first round of the ECHL Playoffs. Kalamazoo won 9 of their final ten games to finish the regular season to make the playoffs. South Carolina was the only team hotter than Kalamazoo to finish the regular season. On paper, this series appeared the most mismatched series of the first round. South Carolina being the 2nd seed and Kalamazoo as the 7th seed. All rounds of the ECHL playoffs are a best of 7.

Game 5 was a must-win for Kalamazoo to keep their playoff dreams alive. South Carolina had the 3-1 lead in the series. Kalamazoo starting goalie, Joel Martin, kept the team in the series with stopping everything he could. Kalamazoo won game three at home before the series shifted to South Carolina. Even though South Carolina was the higher seed, the series started in Kalamazoo due to scheduling conflicts in South Carolina. I only attended game five on Saturday but followed the other games online.

A Kalamazoo Look: March 11th

Kalamazoo is still fighting for a playoff spot and had a huge 3-in-3 weekend against conference rivals. The first game on Friday was at home vs. Norfolk. Kalamazoo then hit the road for games in Wheeling and Toledo. I only saw Kalamazoo play on Friday.

I was in Kalamazoo for team practices on Thursday and Friday. Both practices were high tempo. On Thursday Blomstrand and Valk spent a lot of extra time on the ice working on skills like scoring from odd angles. I love taking pictures at practice to catch the guys having some fun.

Kalamazoo had a tough weekend schedule – playing two games at home against Colorado and a game in Toledo on Sunday. Toledo is one of the top teams in the league and Colorado is a very fast and physical team. This is Kalamazoo’s only time seeing Colorado this season. Pat Conacher, Utica Comets GM, was in Kzoo for the games against Colorado. McEneny was in the starting lineup on Friday. As expected, Colorado tried to completely shut down the Valk, Blomstrand, and Fox line by physically dominating them. Colorado was especially tough on Valk with hitting him every opportunity they had. That settled down after the 1st period with Valk watching his opponents closer so he could miss those hits. Colorado players chirped Fox a lot to try to get under his skin in an effort to get him to take penalties. Fox kept his cool and played smart throughout the game. A few Colorado players tried to get Fox to fight but he just laughed them off.

Kalamazoo played two home games as part of the ECHL Hockey Heritage Weekend. There was no ECHL All-Star game this year. Instead, the league had a week of festivities in Kalamazoo consisting of a Stanley Cup tour, several other trophies, and artifacts from the Hockey Hall of Fame. The ECHL Hall of Fame induction luncheon was held on Friday with members of the Kalamazoo Wings and Toledo Walleye all in attendance.

A Kzoo Look: December 27th

December 29 2015 02:00PM

Kalamazoo played two games this weekend following the Christmas break. Kalamazoo lost 5-2 in Fort Wayne on Saturday night. I did not attend that game. Cederholm did not finish the game after taking a high stick to the face. The game got a bit ugly in the 3rd period, and Fox picked up his first fighting major (and instigator minor) of the season. Fox finished the game with 11 PIMs. Besides the fight both Fox and Blomstrand had a quiet night.
