Do the Canucks have enough room to squeeze in Juice?

As the start of Free Agency approaches, the Canucks management has a few, serious decisions to make on some of their pending free agents.

Do the Canucks try to re-sign everyone, given that their year went almost perfectly according to plan? Do they try some new elements? Do they give up on some organizational projects?

We'll find out starting July 1st, but until then, here's my take on what I think the Canucks should do with their pending free agents.

Oh the NHL awards. The host is always dreadfully unfunny, half the players look miserable, and it's always fascinating to see what b list? c list? D list celebrities the NHL scrapes the barrel with to make an appearance/music performance. But it does bring me one of my favourite things in the world: hockey players in suits! Last night I did my best Joan Rivers impression. Let's see the results!

What Do They Do Next?

What have you got ready to conjure up with those magic hands, Mike?
More wizardry? Or another Steve Bernier?

The playoffs are done and the Canucks feel one win short of ultimate glory. The awards have been presented and the Canucks were well honoured.

And now... all of a sudden... we're on to thinking about next season! Free Agency begins in 8 days and the Canucks have some issues with which to contend, starting with the fairly large list of free agents that Mike Gillis and co must either re-sign or let walk.

So ... what do they do next?

Defending Keith Ballard

Honestly, was there anything more majestic this season for the Canucks than a Ballard hip check?

Keith Ballard had a tough year. Of that, there is no doubt.

Starting with off-season surgery, Ballard wasn't quite able to hit his stride in a system and role different than anything he had seen on his two previous teams. With Florida and Phoenix, Ballard was a high-minute, shut-down defenseman and thrived in that role. In Vancouver, he was a bit player on the blue line - a role into which he never did sink his teeth.

So Ballard had a rough go of it. Blocked shots, turnovers, giveaways, constant views from the press box in the playoffs, even as teammates were felled with injuries and suspensions. What do the Canucks do with Keith Ballard?
