Offer sheets are nothing new to the game, but why don't we see them used more regularly by the league's General Mangers? It's something Cory Schneider brought up during a post-practice scrum on Monday. Asked to comment on Red Wings executive Jim Devellano's comparison of players to cattle and owners to ranchers, Schneider was more interested in talking about Devellano's comments that managers operated under an unspoken rule - or a gentleman's agreement - that they wouldn't target each other's restricted free agents.

If you're anyting like Detroit Red Wings' Senior VP of Barnyard Operations, Jim Devellano, it's sometimes hard to tell elite hockey players apart from the rest of the herd. But never fear, the handy chart above should help you out if you ever get into a pinch.

Now, far be it from me to judge a Lester Patrick Trophy winner like Jimmy Devellano, but the cattle comment was a bit over the top. If there's anything I've learned over the years, it's that you don't poke the bear. You lure it with some bait, and then shoot it while it's not looking.

Wait. No. Not only is that the wrong analogy, it's the wrong animal.

We're talking barnyard animals today, especially those that make up the NHL's pecking order...

Suck it up Fans, It's Just Hockey

“It's just hockey.” This is something that I’ve been hearing a lot lately, both from hockey fans and other people that couldn’t care less about the current NHL lockout. Fair enough, the level of importance in this matter is different for everyone. When it comes down to it, a professional sport product is just entertainment, right? Even in a city like Vancouver where hockey and everything Canucks related is binge consumed, there are still those that simply see it as ‘just something to do’. Maybe that's a healthier outlook than some of us bring to our own personal hockey fandom...

Though no trades can occur while the lockout is on going, Luongo rumours have persisted into late September. Who is in the running right now? Apparently Florida has dropped out, but Toronto, Chicago and the dreaded "Mystery Team" reamins "in"? Is that it, or are there more than three teams still in the running for Roberto Luongo?
