Grab Grabovski

Word from the insiders on twitter is that the Maple Leafs have waived Mikhail Grabovski for the purposes of buying him out today. This is a prelude to unrestricted free agency opening up this weekend (and possible re-signing Tyler Bozak). It's a comically poor decision for Toronto who are one of the worst possession teams in the league, but it represents an opportunity for the Flames.

Gabovski had a down year last season in terms of output, but that was due to a combination ofr brutally difficult circumstances and really poor luck (36% ZS and toughest competition on the team, PDO of 98.8). Grabbo has historically been the best possession center on the Leafs and once his percentages regress to the mean his counting numbers will drastically improve as well. Style wise, he is fast, agile, creative with the puck and a quality passer.

Grabovski is 29 and will be paid an average of $5.5M for each of the next 4 seasons, so he's not cheap and there's some risk at the end of the deal. On the other hand, he's a legit top-6 center capable of playing other top-6 opponents and is available for nothing. If he rebounds next season he improves the Flames to a non-trivial degree and could become a viable trade asset should Calgary look to flip him for a return a year or two down the road.

Bonus - check out the difference between Bozak and Grabovski's effect on Phil Kessel.

There isn't a better option on the UFA market than Grabovski. The Flames are high on the waiver order priority...they could either grab him for free right now and accept his exisiting contract or try to court him as a UFA when (if?) he is bought out.

I don't know if the Flames brass will seriously consider acquiring Grabovski, but they should.

@Craig

Sounds about right. In an ideal world the Flames would grab Grabovski off waivers and move out Cammalleri and Stajan. Of course in this ideal world they didn't trade for David Jones, but we can't have everything we want.

My fault, I should have explained after the "LOL"

They will have to get rid of someone soon won't they? They were 300k over the cap after the Lecavalier thing, and now this?

And I agree with the Giroux over Getzlaf thing. Definitely.

The Flyers still have to get rid of someone this year, but Giroux's new deal wouldn't kick in until the next season (2014-15).

I agree on Cammaleri and Stajan, David Jones isn't so bad, he'll fill the space adequately for the time being. He's got some goal scoring talent, will be bottom six.

Quite the fact from Arctic Ice Hockey on twitter...

"Grabovski has scored more goals than Kopitar, Richards, Duchene, Datsyuk, Lecavalier, Berglund, Bergeron, Seguin, Eberle over last 3 yrs."

Whoa that is kinda crazy. More than Kopitar, Bergeron, and Datsyuk. Mindboggling

Feaster would be wise to put a claim in on Grabovski and avoid the chance of refusal in free-agency.

Plenty of chatter in the Oilogosphere about adding Grabovski, but the Gagner signing-to-be makes it a UFA scenario.

Claiming Grabovski not only improves the Flames but possibly denies him as an asset to other divisional teams.

The waiver wire is still a 24 hour window. So any interested teams put in a claim and provided that it isn't the last team overall, Florida, they wait until the window closes and see who submitted.

Essentially Grabovski's fate is decided tomorrow one way or another, be it UFA or waiver claim.

Isn't it 48hrs for unconditional waivers?

Yeah but Steve Simmonds said that he was bad on twitter... haha

Those are some very impressive numbers, I'm unfortunately getting pretty excited about this player, this would be an excellent pickup.

Wherever he goes he'll be worth his current contract.

Pronger on LTIR means $4.9M space anyways for this year as well but that contract starts in fall 2014

But they can't place him on LTIR until the second day of the season, so they have to start the season under the cap. Maybe they'll just put a young player in the minors if they can't trade anybody.

I'd chase Clarke Macarthur if you can't get Grabo. Although he's not a centreman, he's a very good forward. I would love to see him playing with Sven.

This off the intertubes, not sure if it is true but thought fans here might find it worth talking about:

"The Bruins attempted to deal Seguin to the Calgary Flames last weekend, but ultimately Flames ownership squashed any deals for the six-year, $5.75 million contract for Seguin while they go through a full rebuild with inexpensive, youthful players."

The Stars gave up a package that would look something like Brodie, Baertschi and Gaudreau (in terms of quality of NHL player and prospects, etc) to match what Chiarelli got from Nill. So I can see Feaster being reluctant to empty his pockets for the trade to happen, but the way this is played out in the excerpt above seems odd to me.

Probably closer to Brodie (Morrow), Baertschi (Eriksson), Gaudreau (Smith), and 2nd rounder (Frazer). And I don't think that even reaches it (Eriksson is quite good).

I think the key for Boston was getting a top 4 winger back to replace Horton - Calgary doesn't have any pieces like Eriksson that they could have incuded and would have had to include other prospects/picks instead.

Frankly Seguin scares the crap out of me, so in a way I'm glad the asking price was too high.

What I want to know is why Button was included in the deal. Seems like a completely pointless add from the Stars' point of view.

How would that conversation have gone?

Nill: Are you joking? Seguin and Peverley aren't enough. Get your head out of your arse! I want Hamilton.

Chiarelli: Mm. You can have Button..

Nill: deal.

It must be great to get bought out of your contract for crapping the bed, and then a week later having people elbow their way to the front of the line to sign you to a new one. I bet Lecavalier was upset for like 6 hours, then his agent called to say everyone and their dog was interested so he could cash in again.

At least Bryzgalov would be good for some entertaining post game comments, a decided departure from the stone-faced mute days of Kipper.

I think Grabo could be a fit here, my only concern that he appeared very soft during the playoffs. Granted, he literally seemed to be the only one who absorbed massive punishing hits from the Boston forwards. He was a -10 and only put up a measly 2 points in that 7 game series.

However, he would add to the depth of our center position and come in handy down the road. If he's good at possession, he'll be in Hartley's good books. If he plays soft like Cervenka it will be tough sledding for him.

WOW.... after reading excerpts of Grabovski's exit interview on TSN... we have to get this guy... he obviously cares and will be super motivated to stick it to the Leafs.

Although I wouldnt be surprised to see him sign in the same division.

Man he dropped so many fbombs.... rare to hear a plyer go off like that.

He is right though. Why give him that contract and then play him on the third line?

That's why we should pluck him off waivers, because he probably wont sign here if he's UFA. I guess TO tried to trade him & he has a limited NTC & weren't able to. Wonder if we were on that no list?

Yes Mr. Faster, please get Grabovski before another team does. We're in desperate need of a top two line centre and he is a perfect fit with this team for so many reasons.
