Flames Trade Tim Erixon

Kent Wilson

According to Jesse Spector, the Flames have traded Tim Erixon to the New York Rangers for Roman Horak and two second round picks. Flames also sent a 5th rounder to the Rangers in the deal.

Horak is a former 5th round pick who scored 78 points in the WHL last year for the Chilliwack Bruins. He was second on the team in scoring behind Ryan Howse.

So basically the Flames traded arguably their best prospect for 2 second round picks. Ugh.

(Roman Horak just replaces our 5th round pick being sent over)

Well, Feaster bungled it already. Figured it would take at least a little longer, but hey, maybe we'll get the fastest GM firing in NHL history!

This is freaking horrible. Worst case scenario, I have been a devout flames fan for years, and I'm thinking this is the last straw. Not that I am giving up on my team, but wtf you all know what im talking about. ROMAN HORAK!?!???! great job feaster, go stuff yourself with 100 slices of american cheese (I know the joke was used earlier). Cmon, I cant think back to a Flames trade in years that has gone right for this team. We JUST LOST OUT BEST PROSPECT FOR NOTHING, NOT EVEN A FIRST ROUND PICK WTF.

Best case scenerio is Feaster uses 1 of those second round picks and bundles it with our first and tries to move in to the top 10 of the draft? UGH.

We should wait before passing judgement. Maybe Erixon strung them along. Why else would they have waited for deadline day? They must have assumed they could sign him and when things met an impass, they had to bail quick.

I agree: I would have preferred Erixon to what we got, but it could have been worse (i.e., one second round pick).

I'm just upset I pegged my hopes on him for the coming year. I will never love another draft pick again...

Pretty tough day for Flames flames, and a big black mark against Feaster. Not an encouraging start to his FOUR year tenure... The Glencross signing was a small positive, not keeping Erixon who looks like a top two d man is pretty much a disaster!

So I guess Flames fans can't use this great one liner anymore:

"Why doesn't anybody want to play in Edmonton"

Not to mention, ya maybe the 2 second round picks do great and exceed Erixon(unlikely) but there is also now the factor that they need time to develope while Erixon was almost if not already NHL ready.

Flames basically taking 1 step forward(earning draft picks) but giant steps backwards(given up a top prospect)

Sigh

Bad team.

Bad cap situation.

Bad management.

If you're Tim Erixon why would you show up?

Co-sign, shep.

It's sad. He's a serious prospect that they've pissed away for magic beans, and even if he didn't want to be in Calgary, there had to be a better way to get fair value than waiting until the very last minute.

@Scott: Without a doubt. People can blame Erixon but I would assume that any respectable GM would tell some 20 year old kid to shut the f*** up and sign, but Erixon saw the gong show that is King and Feaster and thought "Screw this noise, I totally have an out from these clowns"

Sign of the times to come. Feaster and King are going to destroy this franchise. Give it a couple of more years and we will be wishing it was only as bad as the young guns era. How can those clowns keep mismanaging assets.

I'll lay this on on the head of Dutter. If the IIHF says you can't negotiate during the season then this deal should have been done last summer. I'd say we got something more than just a replacement pick for a guy that didn't seem to want to be here. Who knows, maybe Darryl pissed him off last year and he was never planning to sign here this year. Not that Darryl can be abrasive or anything.

Here's one problem brought about by this mishap. To engage in any sort of rebuild that is necessary, Flames would need to look to trade one of their quality defencemen for a quality forward, possibly someone like Regher if he'd waive his no-trade clause or no-movement clause or whatever it is. The problem is this kind of strategy would be premised on the Flames having enough quality defence prospects. Well one of those prospects in now gone and this makes improving the team that much more difficult.

the failure is not the trade, they got 2 second rounders instead of 1, the failure is to not get him to sign.

It cant be the money since even the ahl salary+signing bonus would be good for a sel regular i believe

I think you're right. He likely saw a chance to go elsewhere and took it, plus he had some leverage once the Flames couldn't sign him during the season. His stock was climbing pretty rapidly, and as I've said before, there was no way a team with holes on defence like Boston would have let a NHL-ready player like him get past the 9th pick.

Flames are the losers in this transaction. The most promising kid in their pipeline to another organization for not so much. Calgary is the new Edmonton.

So I'm a little worried that this is the start of a slppery slope. Accept for Vancouver, western Canadian teams are going to have trouble signing players. Where would you like to sign? LA, San Jose, Tampa Bay, NYR, etc. or Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg......

Maybe they hope Horak-Howse becomes the next Henrik-Daniel.

Ha, only Calgary would look at the way Feaster failed in Florida and say "That's our man!"

I am a flames fan from sweden and I know the Erixon family. Since he got drafted all they talk about is rangers this and rangers that. I can only imagine that he refused to sign in calgary and Glenn Sather knew his intentions. Pretty odd that he ends up in New York, compared to 28 other cities.

IF that is the case, the Flames should have known that when they draft him and should have dealt him last summer then.

@Scott. Should of it been dealt with last summer, well yes and no. Your not going to give up on a top prospect like Erixon until you 100% know that he refuses to sign with your club. So should of it been done last summer? I'd say no. Should of it been dealt with 3-4 days ago.. Debateable. Hind sight is 20/20 but you have to work on convincing him and trying to sign him until last minute.

So far as as Rob Kerr and the Fan960 is concerned, we shouldn't complain because we don't have the facts... Sounds like the words were coming straight from ken king. What a bunch of BS. Thats the job of the media and the fans. Just cause the media doesn't question the flames doesn't mean we should!

perhaps he was never coming to the flames to begin with, yet pighead drafts him anyways. just to show the erixsons he can. rangers now have a nice group of young dmen. delzotto, erixson, and the shutdown kings girardi and staal. thanks dutter.
