I think....I mean the Oil should either try to pump Hemsky's tires to inflate his point total and then trade him soon, don't wait until the trade deadline OR resign him short-term (2 years MAX) to a reasonable contract.

I am leaning towards dump him soon, though his value is low. I would rather keep him IF he could stay healthy but I also don't think he will sign for a short deal.

I know it's a not a great comparable but if we got a late first round pick + Teubert for Penner, should we expect about the same for a UFA injury-prone Hemsky? I don't know what we get (mid-to-late 1st? just a prospect?). I would rather see the Oil flip him soon (by end of Jan)to a floundering team because I think the reward would be much better. I would be ringing Carolina and asking for Gleason or Harrison (Dmen that, you know, actually play D!) + pick (2nd?).

If I was GM, I would really focus on using our assets to leverage 1 or 2 young veteran (late 20s) Dmen who are very good in their own end, can shutdown other teams top players, and physical (but not overtly - IE taking a lot of stupid penalties - the odd one is OK). Yes Weber or Suter would be nice, though I'd do some legwork on what it would take, that's whale-hunting. I think we need a couple top 4 D who can eat a lot of minutes from the Jason Smith/Robyn Regehr mold. Nasty Dmen who play D, whatever offense they bring is a bonus.

To make the playoffs we need to cut the GA down, and reduce the chaos in our own end.

Anyway, that's what I'd do. Until pelhem regains the GM chair.
