MONTREAL, QC - JUNE 26: Jordan Schroeder of the Vancouver Canucks poses for a photo after he was selected #22 overall by the Canucks during the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft at the Bell Centre on June 26, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

The baby Flames face-off against the baby Canucks this aft, with guys like Jon Rheault and TJ Brodie looking to build on a couple of strong performances heading into the main camp. Undrafted Edmonton Oil Kings goaltender Cam Lanigan will get the start for Calgary today. The kid had a rough year behind the WHL's worst team last season and was passed over in the draft as a result. The contest will be largely meaningless for a number of folks on both sides, but you can bet Lanigan will have his game face on.

On the other side, the 'nucks are still battling with Cody Hodgson and his back ailments. He won't be in the line-up today, but look out for Jordan Schroeder - a highly touted American prospect who fell below his consensus rank in 2009 due to size and attitude concerns. A shifty, explosive skater with good offensive instincts, Schroeder actually fell to within range of the Flames during that entry draft. As is their habit, howevver, Calgary instead chose to trade down (twice) and then selected a defender (Tim Erixon). There's no way to tell if Sutter made the right decision just yet, but it'll be interesting to see Schoeder in action nonetheless.

Looks like I cursed Lanigan with my pre-game post. 4 goals on 13 shots mid-way through the 2nd.

Yup. And the dude at the other end has just killed a 4 minute PP virtually on his own.

thank christ principe got canned for this match(or only does edmonton games).

not much else goin' on to me that hasn't been beat to death in the past games.

except nobody's talking about how nemisz motions to his replacement to jump the boards as he approaches the bench. EVERY SHIFT. i'm amused by that.

whoah. that was a bullet from the point by wahl. y'know, like dion couldn't do for the past few years.

oh, and i seriously like lance bouma. i know i've mentioned this a thousand times (cause he wears tömi mäki's #57) but i'm really enjoying him as a player.

do you think the HEAT will be more fun to watch this year than the flames ?

Some of the references you pull out are bizarre. Tomi Maki? Nice. I'm with you on Buoma though...feisty.

I can't say I'm all that upset with the play of the prospects this week. They had a group that will make up the core of their AHL team for this year, and if they get any goaltending at all, they'll likely be pretty decent. Goaltending's obviously a significant "if", of course, because they sure didn't get any this week, with the possible exception of Irving.

tomi mäki was a former flames prospect and my absolute favorite alltime baby flame that never made it. he only ever got one game with the big club, as a replacement player, where he earned himself the "all business tie."

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=454837

he was (is?) a speedy, smart grinder type in the early-issue brandon prust mold (before he was expected to drop'em nightly)... i'm pretty sure prust and bouma have more offensive skill than mäki, but all three share seriously good vision and all seem to end up in the right place a lot of the time. bouma is probably the most talented of the three (IMO).

mäki wore #57 with omaha/the QC til he went back to the finnish men's league's jokerit. fancy pants lance picked up the number the following year.
