What To Watch For

> Can either team score?: Raise your hand if you thought Ryan Kesler, Mason Raymond, Henrik Sedin, Mikael Samuelsson, Alex Edler or Kevin Bieksa would be without a goal three games into the season? Hell Kes, MayRay and Juice don't even have points. The Kings have some flameouts on their own: Kopitar and Doughty haven't scored and Ponikarovsky, Johnson and Simmonds have no points. Check the numbers above: this game could come down to special teams. Speaking of which...

> Discipline: Vancouver has graciously given three 5-on-3's in three games (one to the Kings opening night). Some of that is poor decisions (Bieksa's slash), some are phantom calls (Kesler's puck deflection that was off a Duck stick). Regardless, one of their major weaknesses from last season was the PK, a point the Kings drove home quite well in the first round of the playoffs. Despite the best efforts from Malhotra and Hamhuis, it's still not good enough and you can't hang two man advantage goals on Luongo either. Composure is rarely Vancouver's strength but they'll need to start embracing it if their kill is going to hang around the bottom third of the league.

> Solid 'tween the pipes: Luongo and Quick both entered the playoffs on horrible skids. Now they represent some of the best goalies in the league, both being in the top 10 of SV% and GAA of the short season. The game shouldn't be high scoring, so expect another long night for the netminders. One slip up or miscue could be the game.

On Quick: Im not sold he's an above average starter. He managed a lot of wins last year, but his SV% was a decidedly average .907. He's had a good start to the season, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Bernier usurp him at some point this season.

Also, I noticed last game that it was the Sedins who were primarily matched against Getz/Perry, which is in stark contrast to how AV ran the bench last year. It'll be interesting to see who gets the tough match-ups this evening.

With the Kings having two decent top lines, I suspect that AV won't try to explicitly play one line against another.

Jarret Stoll keeps up the hot/lucky streak. Fluke goal.

Hideous shift by Schaeffer on that first Kings goal. He made the wrong play, wrong read and ended up in no-mans land when the puck went in the net.

It will probably be up to Murray more than AV tonight. So far, it looks like he might have Handzus out versus the Sedins, meaning it will end up being Kesler v. Kopitar.

And the Canucks get into penalty trouble AGAIN. Delayed PK on the goal, and now another. Within the first 5 mins. UGLY.

Wow, the Sedins have had a rough couple of shifts against Handzus and Poni.

Every Canucks game I've watched, Kesler has had great chances. The puck will start going in for him eventually.

He's had some bad bounces too. Once they start falling his way, he'll heat up a pot a few.

There's a better effort from the Sedins. Notice Handzus and Poni weren't on the ice though.

Well, lots of chances but no finish. Aside from the Smyth SH chance and the Stoll goal, fairly solid period from the Canucks.

After watching the Flames "powerplay" so far, the Canucks PP looks like a thing of beauty to my eyes.

heheh fair enough. And it has been effective this year so far. I just don't like it when the Sedins try to pass it right into the net.

and from Ben Kuzma..."Ballard absorbed hit by Richardson, limped off ice favouring left leg and may have also hurt shoulder".

fantastic.

Alberts goes to the box for 5 mns and the Canucks are already without Ballard to start the 2nd.

Yuck.

Tired D means penalties taken. Crap.

Crap. The bounces are totally NOT going the Canucks way tonight.

The Canucks sure look frustrated out there. Not getting any flow to their offensive breakout. Not setting up in the Kings end. Lots of turnovers.

*sigh*

At this rate, I don't see the Canucks scoring in this game.

Well, they're still outshooting, albeit marginally. Maybe they can get something going in the third.

They have to get skating to draw more penalties. they have the speed, they just need to use it.

Imagine how that felt.

Is there a stat somewhere that tracks team totals for blocked shots against? I swear the Canucks have more blocked shots against than any other team. Especially from the blueline.

There is. I'll post it at the end of the game. It's for ES play only, but it may help.

Here's those stats:

http://www.timeonice.com/shots1011.php?gamenumber=20054

This is just 5on5. The Kings have blocked 9 shots so far. The Canucks have blocked 7.

EDIT - the other thing this shows is that VAN has definitely dominated possession in this game.

This is actually what I was looking for:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/teamstats.htm?fetchKey=20102ALLAAAAll&sort=blockedShots&viewName=realTimeStats

And weirdly enough, it shows that the Canucks had the 7th fewest blocked shots in the league last year. Odd.

Those are blocked shots for...meaning shots blocked by your team. That's why FLA leads the way - they gave up a ton of shots against last year.

What I thought you wanted was shots blocked against...meaning VAN shots that were blocked.
