Patrick Kane self destructs

kane

Wow. Just wow.

If there is any truth to this business involving Patrick Kane over the weekend then he seriously needs to be beaten within an inch of his life by someone who has the ability to get through to him.

For those of you who may not have witnessed the further decline of Pro Athletes as role models, here is what went down as reported by TSN:

“Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane was charged with attacking a cab driver in his home town Sunday, a beating police said was triggered when the driver did not have 20 cents in change to give the player and his cousin. Buffalo police said the 20-year-old Kane and his 21-year-old cousin, James Kane, had apparently caught a cab from the city's downtown nightclub district at about 4 a.m. ET. The cab driver suffered cuts to his face and his glasses were damaged, police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said. Both men were charged with felony robbery and misdemeanour counts of theft of services and criminal mischief. Patrick Kane, who earned US$875,000 last season, pleaded not guilty in local court Sunday, WIVB-TV reported. It was not immediately clear when James Kane will appear in court.”

A black mark for a franchise turning the corner

It's refreshing to see a team in the NHL that is having a worse offseason than the Oil isn't it? Since the death of Dollar Bill Wirtz, former owner of the Blackhawks, Wirtz’s son Rocky has piloted the SS Blackhawk into new territory – renewed fan interest, sell out crowds and a fantastic product on the ice. The Hawks have gone from missing the playoffs in 07-08 to losing in the Western Finals last year, largely on the backs of Kane and Toews. The Hawks have been heavily promoting the two players in an attempt to lure Chicago-onians back to the United Center. This news must come as a welcome development to the future of these efforts.

At a time when both American Hockey and the Blackhawks looked to the 2008 Calder Trophy winner as one of their bright stars, Kane has easily taken the “Most Embarassing thing an NHL player can get arrested for Trophy” from Ed Belfour, who was famously arrested back in 2007 after beating up a security guard at a Dallas Hotel and promptly offered his arresting officer “a billion dollars” for his release.

As groans of disgust and dozens of facepalms were heard coming from Blackhawk team offices over the weekend, one cautious staffer issued the following statement:

"He is a big part of our organization and a team leader and we stand behind him," spokesman Brandon Faber said. "As we are still collecting all the facts, it would be premature to comment further at this time."

Unbelievably lame

Patrick. First you cry on national TV when Coach Denis Savard was fired. We all had a good laugh at your expense on that one. Now this? How you have managed to make Plaxico Burress look positively rocket scientist-esque by comparison is amazing. Burress, ex New York Giant and former Superbowl Hero is now facing at least 3 1/2 years in prison after shooting himself in the leg with an illegal handgun in a club in November. Facing jail time for shooting someone is a dumb enough move. When that someone you shot is yourself, you need to look the gene pool in the eye and wonder how you escaped from the primordial soup. Topping that level of stupidity is breathtaking and we have to hand it to Kane for even making an attempt.

Roenick out – Next Gen of American Stars step up

With Jeremy Roenick – one of the highest profile American Hockey players around – retiring last week and with Chelios and Modano aging at a prodigious rate, players like Kane are set to take the stage as the Premiere American talent in an era when the NHL needs American born heroes and fast. Looks like things are going well from where we sit.

Beating up a cabbie?

What a douche.

Seriously.

Did you see the guy he beat up? It was embarrassing that he would even think of doing that to someone that much older than him. Betcha Kane cries again when asked to comment about beating him up.

@ danjo1:

Wait till Kane serves 60 days in New York State prison. The residents there will make him cry fairly quickly I'd wager.

If only that were the case. He will get probation, learn nothing from the incident and later turn down a trade on the basis "he doesn't feel like it."

In Kane's defense, a lot of his salary is tied up in bonuses. If he has an off year, he may need those 20 cents. No-tear shampoo isn't cheap.

I don't know, I hate to brand people but it seems pretty obvious that guy is mentally not all there. I don't think it's a stretch to say that he'll probably be involved in at least one or two more incidents like this before his career is done.

Did you hear that Patrick Kane just bought a new sportscar?

It not only stops on a dime, it also picks it up.

Of course there's rumours afloat now that EA Sports could remove him from the cover of NHL'10...If they do I think Zack Stortini is a shoe in for replacement cover guy.

Finally someone can counter all of the MADD ads against drunk driving.

I'm Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks. Sometimes, calling a cab isn't the best idea.

Who cares about Kane. He will get a slap on the wrist. His cousin will take the fall for the assault and theft and Kane will walk away squeaky clean. He won't miss any games and he'll go out and get more points than any oiler will even come close to.

Wow indeed. I can't believe how many people are lining up to curb stomp Kane already when so far he's only been accused and has entered a not-guilty plee. On the surface the story looks brutal but I seriously doubt that its so black and white. How about waiting till this gets resolved in court and both sides have a chance to speak before passing judgements? According to the cabbie's lawyer now this has all been overblown and will likely get resolved between the two parties. Imagine that, hockey fans overblowing something to do with their beloved sport? That NEVER happens!

On a side note, Tsn's story now mentions the cabbies lawyer saying its routine for a cab driver to lock the patrons in if he thinks they are going to skip on a fare. Theres nothing else in the article that alludes to why the lawyer would go out of his way to say this.

Wonder if the cabbie didn't recognize Kane, wasn't impressed with the tip, and tried to lock them in the car to get a better tip out of him.

I still think something is fishy with this whole story.

What an immature puke. This guy may be a fitness freak and a damn good player but he is clearly a head case as well.

Kane's lucky he didn't try that crap here. I remember coming home from the bar one night, and I started chatting with the driver. Turns out he was in the Special Forces in his home country, and was driving a cab because that was all he could get here.

I'm realistic enough to recognize that absolutely nothing will happen to Kane. He's a star and they don't get punished on or off the ice. Still, I can fantasize about that driver breaking Kane and his douche cousin over his knee.

The lawyer's comments about the door locks and saying the whole incident was blown out of proportion just strike me as odd. Why would he say that stuff? I am going to wait until the whole story is out. I don't think beating a 60 year old is ever necessary, but who knows what led to that. Hopefully we'll hear more details.

For all those douchbags who said the Kane was not in the wrong, have you f-ing head examined for brain damage. Seriously amongst the so called tough guys out there that have beaten cabbies here in Edmonton should be sent to jail as well. I went to school with a douchbag that beat up a cabbie, and ten of us after school one day rolled him like he did the cabbie. Not acceptable.

I didn't see anyone here write that Kane wasn't in the wrong. All I, and other people, have wrote is that we aren't jumping to conclusions like a lot of people seem to be doing. I am going to wait till the whole story comes out, cause I beleive there is more to it than what's been said, before I pass judgement. If Kane was acting like a spoiled snot like the cabbie said, then he probably deserves a lot worse than what he is probably going to get. But for all we know, the cabbie started it because he recognized a millionaire in the street and tried to take advantage of the situation. No one knows yet, so I am just going to wait and see what else comes out.

I realize that it's always prudent to reserve judgement, but some class-A douche just told Tencer: "Maybe the cabbie was having a heart attack, and Kane was attempting to give him aid. You don't know!".

Heh.

If kane did that in my city, the cabbie is likely to pull out a tire iron and leave him in the back 40 for the coyotes to eat. Beating up a cabbie? C'mon, even a person like myself that has based his life on poor judgements knows this as wrong...Glad he does not dawn a wings jersey!

@ baggedmilk:

YOU STAY SAFE OVER THERE SOLDIER.

@ Mayor of MJ:

We both know that there are no need for locks on cars in Moose Jaw. The lack of criminals in town makes them a needless expense.

@ Racki:

Seems to me that if you are a lawyer angling for a settlement in a case like this you should try and keep the news from hitting the media. The hush money goes through the floor if there is no hush.

I'm pretty sure that once the cabby and laywer figured out who the douche was, they thought hmmmm.....we may have overblown this issue, to the tune of, say, 1 million dollars....hahaha, imagine poor little patty kane having to fork over a pile o cash....all because he didn't want to part with 20 cents!!!!!
