Dany Heatley: next steps and options

heatley-questions

The Oilers haven’t backed off from acquiring Dany Heatley, but it sounds like they will have to sweeten the pot if they are going to get him out of Ottawa. The price has just went up according to Sens GM Bryan Murray.

Whether that means the Oilers have to add in some prospects, or take another salary off the books of the Senators is unclear. The unique thing about this deal is that even though the Sens have paid Heatley $4 million, if they trade him before the season starts that money won’t count against their cap.

The team that gets Heatley will only have to pay him $4 million in salary this year, but he is a $7.5 million cap hit on their books.

"Edmonton is the only option that has been presented to us, and you can't tell that there aren't more," J.P. Barry told Sportsnet.ca.

Well I’m not sure how many other options they truly have. The Rangers aren’t interested now that they have Gaborik, and supposedly Glen Sather had targeted Gaborik over Heatley anyways.

The Canucks can’t take him now that the Sedins’ have re-signed for a combined cap hit of $12.2 million per year, and the Wild landed Havlat.

So who are the other options?

I’m betting you think it’s the Kings. They have lots of cap space, are stacked with young players Ottawa would like and are a sexy location for Heatley.

But watch this.

Does that sound like the Kings are interested?

I don’t think so. Sorry Dany you won’t be living the life in LA.

I’ve been told that Heatley has seen this, and it is clear that the Kings are an unlikely destination.

So who else is there?

The San Jose Sharks possibly. But they have 15 players signed for $51 million already. Patrick Marleau has one year left on his deal, the Sens aren’t in love with Cheechoo, and so will the Sharks give up Clowe, Setoguchi and a D-man for Heatley? That would be pretty steep.

The Coyotes and Predators won’t be in the mix, so that doesn’t leave him many options.

Heatley needs to decide today, and so do the Oilers. I think it is time the Oilers ask for a decision from his camp. Is he in, or out?

And then the Oilers need to live with the decision, move on and look at other options to try and improve their team.

They offered a great deal to Ottawa, and the Sens wanted it — for a moment even Heatley seemed like he was willing to come, but he got cold feet and now he is dragging them on the beach in Kelowna.

Enough is enough. Make a decision a move on.

The decision needs to come today, and I think the Oilers need to make it, because it is evident that Heatley can’t make it himself.

There has t o be more then the weather or the city that players dont want to come here.... they are on the road for half the season and if they dont make the playoffs they are here for maybe 4 months and if they make the lpayoffs they are here for 6 months... There has to be something else and IMO it has to be the vets in the room.

There's something wrong with holding your teammates and yourself accountable? Steve Staois is well past his prime and won't ever be a top 4 d-man again but his competitive edge is second to none in that dressing room.

Ethan Moreau has had a couple of rough years on the injury front and I think that caught up with him this year. Not being able to play at your highest level for extended periods tends to diminish your skill set, for some guys faster than others.

Skilled or not you want your leaders to show respect for the game, your teammates, the fans and most of all the COPPER AND BLUE jersey they put on every night.

If anything that dressing room was too loose and there were too many cliques but that's just speculation on my part.

@ scorecoff hemmercules:

To announce what exactly?

As for our meeting with Dany, he said "You're great guys, but I have so much baggage, and right now I have more bad days than good days...it wouldn't be fair to subject you to that." We tried to tell him that we want him and that will wait for him no matter what and then he said us "I feel like I'm changing, and though I do love Alberta and I really like spending time there, I'm not as 'in love' with Alberta anymore.." So we asked him what we could do to change his mind and he said "We don't make each other happy, is that what you want to hear?".. But I he's wrong. He makes us Happy and I think we can make him happy so I'm going to wait for him to change his mind and realize what a great team he's missing out on.. I've poked him a few times on Facebook but then he unfriended me.

Ummm Yeah, I checked my email and had no new mail. Well I did have some, like I got fowarded a link to the Total Eclipse of the Heart Literal video on youtube which was funny, oh and then their Donnie Dumphy that was funny too. But there was not one email from Ottawa or Dany.

I didn't get any texts or phone call, but a fax came over from an annonomous source addressed to me that said "Ha ha 4 players invited to team canada camp suckers!". Anyway I just sat in my office, played minesweeper and stared at a poster of a cat on a branch that was "Just Hangin' on". I expect to do more of the same today.

And the odd reality is that gen y kids (18-23yo) today have a different understanding of what 'hard' work is.

@ dumb: I think we only have a couple of guys who don't necessarily work as hard as they should (Nils, Penner). But to blame that on there age is easy. I'm sure there are plenty of late 20 and early 30 NHL'ers who are just as lazy.

Gents, do we have a confirmed on-the-record source on this, or is this other players speaking off the record? I think we all heard about what it was like in the Oilers' dressing room during the regular season, but I thought that had more to do with MacT having lost the guys than Staios and Moreau being little Napoleans. I'm just asking, as this is the first I've heard of it.

@ bingofuel: I can understand how it would be tough as a younger player to take criticism from Moreau and Staois on a daily basis when: A) Moreau can take ridiculous penalties every game and nobody says boo to him B) Staois is awful, even if he does work hard

It's easier to listen to the leaders when they aren't bad hockey players or if they aren't making bonehead decisions on the ice.

i was actually only talking about different, not the youngsters don't work hard. i just notice a difference in working styles at work, that's all. the 40yo sometimes don't get the 20yo. but we're a regular 9-5 environment. i'm sure NHL locker room is totally different. and so far, reality is, we didn't get any solid reports about Oiler vets' leadership style. all we can do is speculate on the reason why they faltered last season.

Thank you very much for your smartass answer, much appreciated!

I had heard that Tambo might be having a presser at noon or sometime today, just curious if its true, no ridicule necessary.

I thought it might be to say a few things like we arent persuing Heater anymore, annoucing that they have signed an RFA or hired another assistant. Something like that perhaps?? I'm sure the Edmonton media would like a few quotes regarding the last couple days, we did sign a goalie didn't we???

I think Heatly to Edmonton was done yesterday, I hope Tambo says that we can't wait for him anymore and its over. Go for Nash.

kudos... now, if we translate that into nhl terms, kinda gets me to the end of 07/08 when the kids ran free...so much different. what on earth happend to that? why was the locker room, the organization not able to replicate? they say was the coach. gone. let's see next season. for me, it will be exciting to watch, if nothing else, as a leadership experiment.

What is this "the view"? Eventually the old slippers get tossed and ya buy a new pair. I hope that's the mentality that Tambo is leaning towards. Because eventually, guys like Staios, Moreau, Horcoff, Pisani etc...will want a change of scenery or want to retire here. I'd move them while they still have some value. As for the dressing room, Quinn's the drill seargent and he runs a tight ship. Everyone better fall in line and they will under him.
