Jay Bouwmeester Signs With Calgary

As per TSN.ca, Jay Bouwmeester has elected not to test the free agent market, signing a 5-year, 6.6-million dollar per season contract with the Calgary Flames.
Bouwmeester is a complete defenseman with decent but not spectacular offensive ability, and he should stabilize the blueline in Calgary. Nobody questions his ability as a player, and so far this is exclusively a positive for Flames fans. That said, the Flames are very, very close to the salary cap, and given the similarities in contracts between Bouwmeester and Dion Phaneuf I can't help but wonder if the latter is on his way out of town - something that might soften the blow for Oilers' fans.
Why do I say that? It's fairly simple. Jay Bouwmeester, who played for a terrible team in Florida, still had decent goaltending behind him (.936 EV SV%). Dion Phaneuf, who struggled on a very good team in Calgary, did not (.896 EV SV%).
Why does this matter? Because, quite simply, if we reverse the goaltending behind those players, Bouwmeester jumps from having 56 goals scored against him to having 92 scored against. Phaneuf goes from having 79 goals scored against him down to 47 against.
The full story is a lot more complicated than this simple calculation, and if Calgary manages to hold on to Phaneuf than we can't even find this silver lining. But, at the moment, I don't believe the gap (which does exist) between Bouwmeester and Phaneuf is as wide as the majority of people believe.

Count me as one person who thinks Sutter will find a way to make this trio of d-men stay in town. Jokinen hopefully did not unpack too much stuff; he might be the one headed out of town!

interesting to see teams that had cap issues last year ie philly and calgary being the first ones jumping into big contracts...guess there must be some plans in the near future
The Edmonton Flames with all those local boys. Sutter just pissed in the faces of a lot of Oil fans. Hopefully Tambo has one big offseason move in mind, but with our cap spot I tend to doubt it.

dont Worry Dion isnt going anywhere the salary will come from Sarich and Primeau. Brent Sutter Signed with Calgary with the primary connection being his aptitude with Dion. Jay Bo signed because He wanted to play with Regher and Dion. No way hes gone when Sarich is so expendable. Resign pardy and you have a wicked top 6 defense line-up which will cost the same as last year; a little less. Aucoins (4 mill), Vandermeer (2.3) and Sarich (3.6) = 9.9.
Pardy will make ~ 1 mill and Pelech will make a little less ~ 1 mill. Jay Bo makes 6.6 mill = 8.6 mill. It saves money for a HUGE upgrade.
My guess is Sarich will be traded for a slightly above average top 6 forward in the 2 to 3 mill range.
Dont take it too hard Oiler fans. Jay Bo didnt sign with you because he wants a chance at winning. Not signing with a team where the biggest stars are Horcoff and Hemsky. Anyone else see how the lineup in edmonton is actually almost a little worse than Florida? (no Booth/horton) or Vokoun.

Once the season starts, a team cannot be over the cap. The league will reject any move that puts them over, and if they enter over, the league will force players off the roster to ensure compliance.

Now that he's a flame i can officially start to make fun of Jay Bo. The best part about this for the Flames is that the pressure can come off of Phaneuf. The best part for Phaneuf is that he wont be the only one who has trouble reading SpongeBob books in the locker-room anymore. I couldnt imagine a denser duo in the NHL than those two.

While this is true, there are other issues that make comparing the two players more complicated. For example, Jay Bouwmeester started in his own zone 150 more times than in the offensive zone last year because he was the Panthers version Robyn Regehr, while Phaneuf was the opposite (because Regehr was taking the defensive zone draws). In addition, Bouwmeester faced some of the toughest competition in the league. Phaneuf didn't even face the toughest competition on the Flames.
If their roles were reversed, it would be interesting to see what the shot totals would look like.
that's funny, my buddy grew up with him. said he had lunch with JB a few weeks back and Jay said there was no hope in hell he'd go to Edmonton, would either want calgary or detroit and would take a pay cut to play in d-town. guess he wasn't full of it after all....
Calgary now has STACKED defense but arent they going to have trouble scoring when they can only ice 5 forwards to stay under the cap?

I dont think that a team with a pop gun offense has ever been so against the cap. Sutter is trying something new (or old) that could potentially blow up hin his face. How any Flames fan suggest that they ship out jokinen is beyond me. If you ship out Olli you will not get the same offense in return.
