Around the league - Oct 29 2009

Jason Gregor
October 29 2009 09:56AM

We near the end of the first month of the season, and there are many great story lines on the ice. The Avalanche are still cruising, Alexander Ovechkin is still scoring, Anze Kopitar and the Los Angeles Kings are making waves on the west coast, there is still a double-standard for suspensions, the defending champs look dominant, even though Crosby isn’t top-ten in scoring and now teams are starting to sniff around for possible trades.

All summer we heard that the salary cap would be significantly lower next season; due to the downturn in the economy. The NHL is predominantly a gate-driven league, although they do make some money via television, but the majority of the money comes from the fans. Many expected attendance to drop, but early on this season we haven’t seen a major dip, outside of Phoenix.

Here is a look at league-wide attendance last year, and how it has looked so far this year courtesy of www.espn.com.

You will notice that the 12 teams that sold out every game last year are all there, although Philly is just under 100% right now. You would think that if L.A and Colorado continue to be competitive their totals will increase, but from top-to-bottom we haven’t seen a major difference that would lead us to believe the salary cap will drop that significantly.

If the cap stays the same or drops marginally, it will allow many teams including the Oilers, Flames and Canucks to not purge their team. For next season the Oilers have $42.185 million committed to 14 players. The Flames have $44.075 million for 14 players, while the Canucks have $36.625 million committed to 13 players.

The Oilers have young guys like Sam Gagner, Andrew Cogliano, Gilbert Brule, J.F. Jacques, Ryan Stone Jeff Deslauriers and Denis Grebeshkov to sign, while Fernando Pisani, Mike Comrie, Jason Strudwick are UFAs.

The Flames have Dustin Boyd and Brandon Prust as young guys, but have Rene Bourque, Olli Jokinen, Craig Conroy and Erik Nystrom as UFAs.

The Canucks have RFAs like Ryan Kesler, Raymond Mason, Jannik Hansen and Tanner Glass, while their main UFA is Willie Mitchell. They will have to decide if the other unrestricted guys; Pavol Demitra, Kyle Wellwood, Ryan Johnson and Mathieu Schneider are worthy of new contracts.

If the cap doesn’t go down significantly, it will make life much easier for Mike Gillis, Steve Tambellini and Darryl Sutter this summer.

Ice women of the week

It pains me to say this, but even Calgary is ahead of Edmonton when it comes to Ice Women, I call them Ice Women because they are of age and thus women. The Flames have Ice Women now, but they didn’t make my photo of the week. Instead, I will go with this photo-shopped pic of the Dallas Stars Women.

Random thoughts

Yes the Flames have Ice Women, but they also play the most annoying song ever, Cotton Eyed Joe at the Saddledome, and what is worse is the crowd sings along. Just another reason the Rexall DJ must continue to boycott CEJ.

Strange stat. Sidney Crosby has three career hat tricks, and two of them have come on October 28th according to www.nhl.com.

Strange stat part two. Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have taken the 3rd most minor penalties in the league with eight. Only Hal Gill and Scottie Upshall with nine and Mike Komisarek (10) have been in the sin bin more often.

The more I watch James Neal the more I like him. The Stars drafted him 33rd overall in 2005, and he has developed nicely since. He spent one year with Iowa in the AHL, and then broke out with a 24-goal campaign as an NHL rookie last year. The 22-year-old has 14 points in 12 games and has a solid overall game. He skates well, has size, blocks shots and has great vision. He will be a guy to watch for on the 2014 Canadian Olympic team.

I don’t think the USA will be that good at the Olympics, but with Craig Anderson and Ryan Miller off to great starts, they should have solid netminding. Both have been sensational, and are the main reason the Sabres and Avalanche lead their divisions.

The best Canadian goalie this month has been Marc-Andre Fleury. Barring an injury Roberto Luongo, Martin Brodeur and Fleury will be the three goalies in Vancouver.

Jeff Deslauriers has a ridiculous .957 SV% and a stellar 1.51 GAA in two games this season. Shouldn’t Pat Quinn use him again soon?

Another bad week for the NHL injury-wise. Ilya Kovalchuk, Roberto Luongo and Simon Gagne all went down. Is it just me or does the NHL have more injuries to top stars than the NFL, NBA and MLB. Hockey is a tough game, and I don’t think there is any way to prevent the stars from getting hurt.

I can’t stand the Yankees. Go Phillies. Cliff Lee was sick in game one, and Chase Utley is a gamer. But let’s hope that Pedro ‘Soul Glo” Martinez doesn’t allow the Yankees to be “His Daddy” in game two.

Using the Cheers theme music for the Kelsey’s commercial doesn’t fit. Sorry, but that’s not a place you go often enough that people know your name.

Teams with the most fights are the Flames (13), Oilers, Leafs and Sharks (11), Canucks (10) and Senators and Canadiens (9). The six Canadian teams are in the top seven. Seems they understand what most hockey fans enjoy.

The Kings and Rangers each have four players in the top 30 in scoring. The Rangers won’t maintain that, but the Kings might with Anze Kopitar, Ryan Smyth, Dustin Brown and Alexander Frolov.

Terry Murray benched Alexander Frolov in Dallas and since then he has three goals and seven points in four games. Do many of you still think that benching a player and telling the media and fans he has to be better is really that bad???

Say what!?

Salo has had 39 injuries in his career”, Farhan Lalji from TSN on Just A Game. Seriously he wasn’t lying. Salo is the biggest band-aid in the game.

“I will go down as the first NHL player to play with H1N1”... Ladislav Smid.

“The Flames will come out strong and see if Colorado can handle their physical game. If they can’t it might be a blowout for Calgary”, Jermaine Franklin on Flames radio pre-game show. The Avs were 9-1-2 going in, how could anyone think they would get blown out. Avs won their 10th game.

So, is the Montreal trade talk for real or just something thrown out there?

I don't know what every one else thinks, but I for one feel last year creeping in. I hope I'm wrong

Randy Jones to the kings on re-entry. Smart move by Philly, you know using up cap space on a player you don't have will be the way of the future.

Love this segment Jason, but "Ice WOMEN of the week?

Jason - They're called Ice GIRLS. You know it. I know it. Everybody knows it. Using the term "Women" just sounds dumb.

Unless ON gets slapped with a discrimination suit and is forced to use the term "Ice People", why not call 'em by their proper given phrase? Besides, Ice Girls just plain sounds hot, which is the point, right?

Since it seems like Patrick O'Sullivan is constantly shooting the puck and from pretty much anywhere I figured he'd be up there on the shots list so I had a look. POS has only 36 shots...3 more than Hemsky. I guess I wasn't imagining all of the shots wide.

I for one am starting to get VERY concerned about our big ship the SS Big Sexy. All we keep hearing are comments like "he isn't close yet". What exactly does that mean? Is it potentially a Brett Lndros type of situation? Wow, I hope not.

Wow, no doubt. I thought by putting him down earlier, it meant he wouldn't see the light of day in the NHL again... at least until the new year when the cap hit would've been lessoned for Philli. Not smart.

Kings are lookin good though. I believe I said they'd be a darkhorse for most improved team in are preseason predictions. Good on me (so far), and you to Gregor. If I'm not mistaken, you called for them to make the playoffs.

When will the Media stop saying it is just a slump for horcoff and realize he is no better then dominick moore of florida or blair betts or philadelphia. Horcoff is now a boarderline second line player and probably belongs on the third line (or at least have his ice time dramatically reduced) As longs as Horcoff plays top six minutes the Oilers are not a playoff team.

When you screw in life at work or at home people usually respect you more when you admitt to the mistake instead of using cliches as the media and oilers are doing in the case of Horcoff. Time to admit a mistake and put Horcoff on waivers and NEVER recall him if he clears. It time for Katz to forget about friendship and prove he is in it to win it. He has taken worse hits on the market then 5.5 million a year.

Stop hiding behind friendships and closed door relationships edmonton media and start telling it like it is Shawn Horcoff is overpaid but 4.5 miliion dollars and could easlily be replace by maholtra, betts, moore, bonk or others.

SEND HIM DOWN TO SPRINGFIELD FOREVER

I think JG referred to them as "Women" cuz of the blogument he got into with someone last week over the whole sexual explotation thing (I'm guessing his combatant was female). This was an honest attempt to be politically correct.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Probably because most fans don't want an 8:00 game on a Thursday night. It certainly isn't a rarity, as most TSN doubleheader's that do not include pacific time zones start at 7:30. Just be glad they're on TSN at all (Sportsnet's broadcast sux).

I meant the fans actually going to the game. An 8:00 start on a Thursday means getting out of there an hour later than normal and then going to work the next day. You or I may not give a flyin hoot, but some fans do.

OK. We get it. Talk about beating a dead horse! The fact of the matter is that he gets paid what he gets paid. On top of which no other team is going to take on his contract. He's not going to be traded and he's not going to re-do his contract (would you?).

We all know Horcoff's contract isn't the best value right now, but he could just as easily turn it around if he wasn't taking 1,278,428 faceoffs a game and checking the league's best talent for 24 minutes while lugging around coke machines. To keep harping on things that aren't going to change seems rather pointless. This argument was played 6 months ago.

It's funny you say this because I think we need to get rid of those fans, ever wonder why it is so quite in the building well it's because half the people there aren't fans. I know there are jokes about Montreal and Vancouver having guys with slick back hair and suits on, but Edmonton is just as bad.

Man I love these posts!

What great comparisions, Betts and Mooore! Theirs not a rational human being alive that will look at the careers of those 3 and come to the conclusion that they are the same.

Hey, maybe this is it. Maybe Horcs shoulder surgery was the final straw for his offensive game.... but claiming that to be the case 12 games into the season is beyond ridiculous.

Hate to take sides, Jason, but Davey-Boy is right. We get that they're not really girls anymore, the same way people know that call-girls aren't really girls anymore either (at least I hope they get that) but the Women thing makes them sound somehow intimidating.

And i'll give you this one, he wasn't great early against Colorado, but this sh1t is getting old. Forget about any players salary. and focus on what they do on the ice. Over the last 3 seasons, Horc has been consistantly one of our better players. Any of you haters want to put your money where your mouth is? My email is southside@persona.ca, and I'll wager that Horc ends up with over 47 points and is a plus player. Put up or shut up.

And remember it is ok to make mistakes and admit it.

Really?

This may be the most ignorant post I've seen in a long time. This is a 'Hockeybuzz' type of response. Unintelligent, near-sighted and ignorant of hockey.

I bet you were in line at the Sports Closet in '06 buying a Horcoff jersey, applauding his heart, his willingness to block shots and score timely goals. It was because of that performance that Horcoff got his contract. And I believe it was deserved.

Since then, its been a slump, followed by what seems like injury after injury. Have you not heard about the flu that has been ravaging the team? Have you not heard about the potential broken foot he is playing with? Have you not seen that he is playing the toughest minutes on the team and taking by far the most faceoffs on the team?

Yes, he is under-producing. Yes, he is making a lot of money. But lets let a whole season go by and let him get healthy before we throw him under the bus. His stat line isn't very good right now but you ignore the other things the guy brings. Think Rob Brind'Amour. Not Vinny Levavalier.

Wow! I will take that bet! Sure he could possibly get 47 pts, but he won't ne a plus player, mark my words! Unless we sign a cheap guy to take draws, this team is set up to have Horc as an overpaid yet still over worked faceoff horse! This guy is gonna burn out at this rate!

Is the term girls really sexier than women??? I will say this...I'd much rather have a women than a girl. A women has a bit more expertise and more confidence. It's funny how a term can invoke different ideas.

It's funny you say this because I think we need to get rid of those fans, ever wonder why it is so quite in the building well it's because half the people there aren't fans. I know there are jokes about Montreal and Vancouver having guys with slick back hair and suits on, but Edmonton is just as bad.

As an Oiler season ticket holder, yes, I do like the 7:00 starts and prefer not to have a 7:30 or 8:00 pm start.

And just for the record I am a boisterous fan, I am just up at at work for 7 am on weekdays.

Yes, we maybe do need ice girls. We have Eskimo Cheerleaders.

Was at last game and not very appealing watching guys shoveling on the ice. There was one brunette that was kinda cute.

Win tonight.

Lol, couldn't you have lied and said 6am?

My only real issue is if TSN is going to show the game they can't split the feed to us out west if the first game goes to OT. It happened a couple time last year and we end up missing 10 minutes of a period to watch a stupid zamboni screw up and do the ice 3 times for a shootout.

I'm just sayin'.

JR has all the ice girls beat..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywzbCfqwFIM

It appears that Northlands and the Rexall Oilers are more conservative and will not address the Ice Girls. Oilers control the building, so the excuse of passing the buck to Northlands does not wash, and the farm boys in blue will continue to entertain the crowd.

Moore Points at age 28 - 81 gp 45 points FO % 54.1 -2 Horcoff Points at age 28 - 80 gp 51 points FO % 50.6 -22

I beg to differ maybe betts is a strech but as you can see Moore playing with worse linemates then horcoff did put up comparable numbers.

what if he doesnt improve his scoring Jason then does the media like yourself still believe it is worth it to have him on our second line.

This isnt a knee jerk reaction. The only way to get his contract off the books with out sending him to the minors is trading him with 1 or two first rounders to a team near the floor of the cap but I dont forsee that happening .

You are correct we are just pandering to Horcoff...clearly you haven't been listening.

I asked him straight out if he is pressing, and what has to change.

I heard you ask this Question, but why worry about you image to the guys and ask him a harder a question like.

" Do you think your play right now we be better suited on the third line, or would playing with the 4th line guys help give you a jump start?"

or

" Shawn, do you think some of your minutes on the PP should go to Brule or Cogliano? and if so how you talked to Coach Quinn about this?"

Wow so you compared one year because that is all Moore has had.

Moore 27 17pts in 68 games Moore 26 17pts in 69 games

Should I continue? As for this year Moore 0 points in 5 games and minus 5, so it's not like he is doing much either at this point. At least with Horcoff he has been consistent over 4 years and one could expect him to bounce back, not sure anyone other then Horcoff haters and Florida fans can say the same for Moore.

I dont see why people think all of a suddne horcof will start scoring again, how many open nets did he miss last year, this isnt a 12 game problem it is a 94 game problem. THe guy doesnt belong in our top six that is the main point I am trying to make. THe fact the No ball s Quinn has moved him back up to the first line for tonights contest shows the oilers of lsat year are back

ha ha ... I thought, why lie, tell the truth. I'm at work around 6:30, grab coffee and then start.

sounds like you need to become a season ticket holder ... :o) ... or are you one of the out of towners ?

my parents come in 40 miles for games - they attend about 25 a year and they definitely like the 7:00 pm starts.

I disagree with IgorUlanov, Tambellini has taken the reins of a team that is overpaid and underperforming as a .500 club over time. First and Foremost, Oilers came out the game with the exact same record last year and the wheels fell off - so is the rose off the bloom already ????? Until the overpayments of Lowe have run their course, or have been dispursed via waivers - or trade (taking a bad contract back) having a playoff team will be a challenge. Problem is that Lowe in the past has let emotion and the post stanley cup run / free agent frenzy diminished the available money to "performers" as the pretenders have taken more than their fair share.

Lowe cancelled the Comrie trade for Corey Perry out of spite via blood money. The media pull a Mark Mcgwire here and do not talk about the past - this was a bonehead move - Corey FREAKIN PERRY.

Lowe surrendered draft choices for Penner. Placing Penners non performance the last two years aside for a minute, why would a GM surrender draft picks and overpay, when you could just overpay a free agent - case in point - the Nylander case, he was playing possum and possibly using the deal as leverage with Buffalo - refusing to proceed with the verbal agreement. So it appears at that time, very few players wanted to actually come to Edmonton. Isn't it ironic that the the two GM's at the time throwing mud at each other, calling each other idiots - TRADE THEIR TWO FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS with Penner and Kessel.

MacTavish despised Nillson's work ethic, and Lowe signs the kid for two more years for 4.5mm dollars - OMG.

Horcoff learns quickly from Tie Domi (Tanenbaum) on how to influence people, rumored to be Katz's workout friend - signing for more money than the market warranted - not his fault, back up the truck.

http://www.canada.com/topics/sports/story.html?id=88fe637a-c56e-40aa-8301-4ffce4931d2b Reference: Mr. Tanenbaum and Mr. Domi are known to be friends, but those close to the owners say if the general manager was nudged, it didn't happen inside the boardroom.

Is anyone comfortable with Pasini's contract, we have been blessed with financial relief on the LTIR - untradeable for both medical and money reasons.

Final signing of Khabibulin raises my eyebrows, when the Oil pushed Rollie out the door due to age, and we now have an aging goaltender past 40 at 3.75mm per year when the contract is over. Paying Khabibulin may be a thorn in our side if JDD starts to shine, this year, next etc - when Anderson (1.5 and 2.1mm two year deal) and Biron (1.8mm one year) were available.

Oilers have very little cap space, with 89 and 13 coming out of their entry level deals, something has to give, as the math will not allow this formula next year.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda..... time will heal these contract mistakes, only time. Rexall Sports have corrected the situation with promoting / extracting Lowe and removing him from this equation to prevent future harm.

Ridiculous.
